I was raised alongside the Alatna River and Gates of the Arctic National Park. I have run its entire length in both winter and summer and every time there are new and incredible experiences. I have watched caribou pour along its valley and I have seen bull moose the size of city buses grazing its edges as I floated by. Curious wolf pups have peered from its banks on an August afternoon and I have spent days winching our cabin back to safety from its flood ravaged edges. Downriver from me it has supported indigenous people for thousands of years as a food source and transportation corridor. The river continues to teach and inspire and I’m thankful for that.
